FTC discussing public policy toward journalism today « Pursuing the Complete Community Connection
Steve Buttry said: New blog post on FTC hearing (linking to @nytimes, @mjenkins, @dangillmor, @chanders, @jeffjarvis).
I’ve already blogged (critically) about the FTC’s involvement in this issue and about two specific proposals for government subsidies, and I won’t repeat those arguments here. But I do want to call attention to some other good writing on the issue.
Creating better news start-ups
Steve Buttry said: Seeking better ideas for the news biz than paywalls (@glennluther w/ my comment). #news20
We can keep betting on the paywall, a system that has been proven not to be the savior some have hoped for, or we can start working together to come up with solutions that move online news into a different future.
To change an organization, focus on action, not the org chart « Pursuing the Complete Community Connection
Steve Buttry said: New blog post (@bergus, note rocket-fuel metaphor): To change an organization, focus on action, not the org chart.
Just as a rocket needs powerful explosions of fuel to escape Earth’s gravity, an organization needs powerful explosions of action to escape the gravitational pull of a traditional organization. Simply drawing a new rocket ship won’t get you to the moon.

New York Times protects its readers from reading about “tweets” « Pursuing the Complete Community Connection
Steve Buttry said: New blog post, noting that our language doesn't need protecting by @nytimes Standards Editor.
One of my favorite things about our language is how fluid, inventive and expressive it is. We don’t speak or write now as they did in the age of Chaucer or Shakespeare, or even in the groovy 1960s when I was growing up. Yet each new word or expression is vigorously resisted by people who cherish the past of language but wish to deny it a future.
Tomi T. Ahonen’s view of the present and future of mobile « Pursuing the Complete Community Connection
Steve Buttry said: New blog post: @tomiahonen's view of the present & future of mobile: More people w/ mobile than w/ running water.
If you’ve read my posts on mobile-first strategy, I highly encourage reading this. Ahonen’s view is more global than mine and not focused on the news business. His broad view provides excellent context for my narrower view and his understanding is significantly deeper.
Geotagging The World - Only Dead Fish
Steve Buttry said: Interesting observations from @neilperkin: "Geotagging the World"
I'm often surprised how relatively out-of-the-way and even quite obscure places have already been tagged on location services. All that information that is so rapidly accumulating, all those interesting uses for it, all that value, all that potential to reveal things that we didn't already know.
Yes, C3 is only “halfway there,” if that « Pursuing the Complete Community Connection
Steve Buttry said: New blog post, agreeing with a Belgian critic that C3 is "only halfway there."
Yes. Absolutely. I wrote C3 more than a year ago, hoping to stimulate discussion of innovation in the media and never presuming that I had all the answers.

Steve Buttry said: Great explanation of what J-school is good for (and bad for) by @jeffsonderman.
If you do it right, you will leave J-school with hundreds of friends, colleagues and professors who share a lot in common and can help each other along their career paths for years down the road. Journalism jobs are still a lot about who you know, and who knows you — and J-school is a great place to know a lot of people.
