In 2004, the state of Colorado passed a renewable energy standard requiring "large utilities to produce 10 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2015." By 2007, it became clear that the goal would be met three years ahead of schedule - so a new mandate of 20% by 2020 replaced it. That second measure is moving along quickly as well - big companies like Xcel Energy are looking to meet their goals five years ahead of schedule. So Governor Bill Ritter is currently introducing legislation to boost it to 30% by 2020. Perhaps the sky is the limit!
