The Times article was built on a solid foundation of fact, and Richard Stevenson, the editor directing coverage of the election, said, “We don’t want to fall into the trap of false equivalency.” He said reporters had seen a pattern of “demonstrable falsehoods, exaggerations, misconstruals or omissions” on the part of McCain that seemed notable, even for a heated presidential campaign. While the article said that Obama’s “hands have not always been clean in this regard” — he “incorrectly” said that McCain supported a hundred-year war in Iraq, “distorted” his record on school financing and took economic comments “out of context” — the brunt fell on McCain because of his large number of misrepresentations recently.

Obama was by no means blameless, I argued, but his lapses were nowhere near as egregious as his opponent's. I stand by everything I wrote. But a series of new Obama attacks requires a rebalancing of the scales: Obama has descended to similarly scurrilous tactics on the stump and on the air.

It quotes Mr. Limbaugh as calling all Mexicans stupid and ordering them to “shut your mouth or get out,” which he never did.

"It's great, right?" one reporter who travels with the campaign told me..., summing up the prevailing it's-evil-but-it's-brilliant view of the new McCain press strategy. "I mean, it's smart. Why their embrace? Because that's what the media feel most comfortable with; that's what they're good at. (They think.) They're good at speculating for weeks on end about who might be selected as a candidate's running mate and what that hypothetical matchup would mean on Election Day. They're good at ruminating about polls. They're good at trying to read politicians' minds. But now we're seeing the dire consequences -- when the press wants to inform voters about outrageous campaign conduct (like the Bridge to Nowhere, McCain's untrue claim that Obama plans to raise "your" taxes, or even in the margins the lipstick fiasco), the press no longer wields the same authority, in part because the political press has consciously folded its work into the larger entertainment culture.
