Publish2 Editorial Standards

Publish2 believes that journalism still matters because editorial standards still matter. At a time when digital technology is rapidly transforming and expanding the practice of journalism, and allowing anyone to wield "the power of the press," editorial standards are more important than ever. These standards are what separate journalism from marketing, PR, paid advocacy, or personal expression, which on the web are increasingly difficult to differentiate.

Publish2 is a community of journalists and news organizations that maintain editorial standards. Our standards are a working draft — we welcome input from the journalism community.

For Journalists

  1. Maintain editorial independence from governmental, commercial, or special interests, and do not engage in public relations, marketing and lobbying.
  2. Do not plagiarize.
  3. Do not trade coverage or favored treatment for money, gifts, or favors.
  4. Clearly disclose any conflicts of interest.
  5. Be accurate and honest.
  6. Be accessible and accountable to the public.

For News Organizations

  1. Maintain editorial independence from governmental, commercial, or special interests.
  2. Clearly differentiate paid placements, advertisements, and non-editorial content (such as press releases) from editorial content.
  3. Adhere to, and preferably make publicly available, a set of journalism standards or an editorial code of ethics (separate from any SEC-mandated, general codes of ethics).

Publish2 is a platform for link journalism and link-based newswires. Our mission is to help journalism survive and thrive on the Web by promoting the practice of link journalism.
